Substance
Kevin Jaques - Who is he?
My name is Kevin Jaques, the Director of MultiLayer Design and I would like to share with you some information about myself and why you would want to hire my company on a freelance or contract basis.
In today's over saturated market when looking for a good Web Designer it is hard to distinguish who really offers high quality and value for money.
It's a real struggle for potential clients to search for the right Web Design Company that has their client's best interests at heart.
Before I tell you about my IT career I would like to tell you I wasn't always in IT!
For 16 years I was a Bench Joiner/Craftsman and worked for numerous joinery firms, including one for 6 years, so I'm no fly-by-night guy. During this time I produced excellent quality bespoke furniture, kitchens, reception desks, bars, panelling, stair cases, windows, doors and virtually anything you can think of relating to wood. I even made some guitars along the way and I pride myself on having created superbly crafted work over those years. I specialised in many areas of this trade during my time as a Craftsman.
No matter what the task at hand is, I keep on creating high quality work. It's in my nature to succeed, of course there have been failures along the way but nothing that is worth having comes without taking risks and tackling new things head on.
I always try and push for excelling in specific areas as I have learnt over the years that you cannot do everything well. However, the constant striving to better myself pushes me to work in unfamiliar areas and I find unique ways to improve upon those with my skills and ability to learn new things quickly.
IT - I Just Had to get in the IT Crowd
I have been using computers since the ZX-80 days! Along the way came numerous computers and languages and I started building pcs around the end of the PC 386 era. I liken building pcs to stickle-bricks or lego, as the components are already pre-built and being a joiner used to making things from scratch I was already well on my way to putting pc components together. I still build my own pcs to this date, I'm all for value for money with buying quality components so I can appreciate that you would want the same thing working with my business.
Around the time the pc-486's came to market, I was looking to get into IT but faced the usual problems of not having the experience that the market needed. By then the desire to change my career from Joinery to IT was very strong and I was determined to make it happen. I put myself through college for 2 years part-time, 3 nights a week to gain a HNC in Computing & Software Engineering. I managed to find a permanent placement in a medium sized company where I worked for 7 years, gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge in all manner of IT related things.
As you can see from the above, my heart was in IT from very early on. Coupled with my passion for technical drawing and graphical communication it was only a matter of time before I chose to work in the realms of IT. I now have over 10 years professional experience within the software industry, covering a wide range of areas; from analysis to web design and web development, including database development, complex databases, stored procedures, functionality and usability.
I have worked as part of a team and in addition to software development I have specialised in SQL Server database performance tuning and optimising mission critical database systems.
Realising Potentials
After working for the same company for 7 years, I was no longer satisfied with a 9-5 job and not being in charge of my own destiny. I believed that I had something more to offer and the result is MultiLayer Design.
One of my goals for MultiLayer Design Ltd is to provide high quality, professional Website Design and Web Development services and adhere to web standards as part of the business culture. My view is to offer high quality Web Design and marketing services to small and medium sized businesses in the Farnborough/Hampshire/Surrey and well beyond. All of my work is guaranteed to exceed your expectations and adhere to high quality standards as a matter of course.
From working as the Director, Web Developer, Web Designer, all the way down the line to the Tea Boy , you can bet I take a pride in everything I do. I make a mean cup of tea and my coding isn't that bad either (insert various smilies here). Even the tea boy knows that providing quality over quantity and adhering to standards helps make the business work better.
Joking aside, there are real business benefits from this ethos which I would like to share with you by being my clients, your business success is my success too.
It's important that working on a project with MultiLayer Design is a collaboration of efforts. In order to fully tap into the way your business works and to help improve its aims and goals it's important to realise this process. We can then push business benefits into a positive experience and a prosperous one.
Why Choose Us?
Business Ethos
Part of what I envisioned for MultiLayer Design is that it practices what it preaches. You will find if we say our code validates against the current W3C Web Standards then you can bet it will. I am pragmatic, however I do strive to succeed and make adhering to standards as painless as possible through my high coding standards and best practices.
MultiLayer Design thrives on creating standards compliant web sites and improving best practices. We provide real solutions to business problems and by already coding and designing to such high standards, this makes it easier for you to choose us for your business and provide solutions your business needs.
I have your business's best interests at heart as I believe if your business is successful then mine is too. You can trust that I work very hard to ensure standards are met and exceeded and kept throughout the lifetime of the work I produce.
I believe being proactive and using my initiative are key to helping you get the most from your online business presence.
Best Business Practices
I build web sites using the latest coding practices so pages load more quickly, are Search Engine friendly and take less time to update and maintain. All of our websites use only valid hand crafted XHTML and CSS code via appropriate languages for the project in hand.
We use business rules to ensure the best possible results and we adhere to them as much as the project dictates. This brings with it large benefits to search engine rankings as well as usability.
We hand code every website from scratch, but often reuse code snippets and templated output systems which are already proven to work well (this site has been crafted using the MultiLayer Design framework). We will only use templates as part of a blog or forum software as these are necessary but we will always edit and style them to match your needs.
It is not always possible to catch every bug, this is very the nature of the software beast. However, by implementing strategies to reduce ongoing bugs and issues,
these are kept to a minimum. All our work is guaranteed to work across mulitple browsers.
Note: We no longer provide support for Internet Explorer 6, this browser is not a standards based browser, however, if your project requires that
this browser must be supported we can faciliate this requirement at an extra cost. We realise it may not be quite the right time to pull the plug on this
browser especially if your target market still use it, however, it is important to realise we are going forward and not reverse.
Our excellent on-site search engine optimisation is included in our web design and web development services as a matter of course. With good optimised code you have an excellent start to your search engine success.
Integrity and Accountability
In so many of todays businesses there is a lack of accountability. People are reluctant to own projects or be made scape-goats and I believe that accountability offers better results. At the end of the day we all make mistakes, we are only human.
Accountability offers much more than just pointing the finger, it also offers the benefits of putting a name to something that may fail at times. However, it is how we pick ourselves up, learn from our mistakes and get to fix things which makes accountability work so well.
I believe being able to fix mistakes when they occur is much more beneficial to your business than apportioning blame. Blaming someone never fixes anything and failures will happen in business from time to time. If you are not failing by testing and trying new strategies then you are not learning!
